We are a custom chemistry company specializing in the design and synthesis of difficult organic compounds for the pharmaceutical, drug discovery, agrochemical and biotechnology industries as well as government and academic research institutes. Our mission is to defy the impossible organic chemistry using innovation and ingenuity. We have a world class team of PhD organic chemists with multiple years of experience and a vast array of knowledge. Our 20,000 square foot facility is heated and cooled using geothermal technology allowing OBITER to run energy efficiently. The combination of our modern facility and our talented teamwork gives OBITER the flexibility to meet our customer's needs and exceed their expectations. Our goal is to build long lasting relationships with our clients by providing thorough and efficient chemistry services and cost effective solutions. ABOUT US OBITER Research was established in 2001 in Champaign, Illinois. Obiter (loosly translated from Latin means "off the beaten path") The company initially occupied 2 small rooms in the technology Commercialization Lab in the University of Illinois business incubator. “"Our company is unique in that we embrace the difficult projects; the impossible chemistry! We specialize in things other companies give up on."” states Dr. William A. Boulanger, Chairman and Executive Chemist. In 2005 the company landed a substantial FTE contract, which allowed for rapid growth and additional contracts followed. The company finally became too big for an incubator and built its current 20,000 square foot facility to house its 20 plus employees in 2007. The new facility is energy efficient and designed specifically for OBITER. Geothermal technology uses water in closed loops from wells connected to heat exchangers to heat and cool the space. This in combination with efficient low flow, low turbulence fume hoods creates an energy efficient well ventilated facility. Each of the four labs has workspace for 6 chemists and an additional Kilo scale suite. The labs have extra wide hallways allowing them to bring temporary equipment in and out easily and efficiently. We put all of our equipment on wheels to keep the labs flexible. The company is managed by Chad L. Boulanger, President and Chief Executive Officer. "We only hire research chemists with doctoral degrees who are enthusiastic about their jobs and have strong theoretical and practice backgrounds." We have expanded beyond simple research and process development, and now perform kilo scale manufacturing up to a maximum of 500 kg/month of specialty chemicals. These range from radio nucleotide adsorption media for analysis, DNA dyes, pharmaceutical intermediates to neutraceuticals. OBITER Research maintains a close relationship with the University of Illinois where Dr. Boulanger is an Adjunct Professor and maintains their high pressure facility. OBITER Research has manufactured chemical materials for a number of professors throughout the country as well as numerous start-up companies. Conquering the difficult chemistry has brought back customers again and again. Manufacturing on a larger scale has opened up additional opportunities in the chemical industry and OBITER Research is positioned to take advantage of it. Ongoing focus is on expanding the company’'s clientele base while continuing to meet head on the challenges that the world of chemistry creates.

Custom Synthesis Custom synthesis has always been a significant part of OBITER Research's focus. We can accommodate projects that range from simple small molecules to the most challenging and complex compounds with quantities ranging from milligrams to kilograms.Our chemists are experienced at performing complex, multi-step synthesis and solving difficult chemistry problems. We can work with your process or develop a new process that maximizes yields and minimizes cost. Our company maintains a DEA schedule II-V permit and offers competitive prices and timely delivery of products made to your specification. Submit a CAS#, structure, or chemical name to our sales department and we will rapidly provide you with a quotation.Examples of our custom synthesis services include: Stable Isotope Labels If you need standards for your API's, metabolites, or intermediates in your production process, we can prepare compounds which incorporate deuterium, carbon-13, or nitrogen-15. We can intersect your synthetic schemes or we can devise a new route based on available labeled intermediates. Fee-For-Service Projects When you only need a single compound as a standard, an intermediate or for screening we can supply you with the desired material. All compounds are prepared in the strictest confidence. Lead Optimization When you have a lead compound but need to prepare additional analogs we can deliver the analogs that you require. Process Development OBITER Research can help you turn your chemical concepts into commercial-scale products with our extensive hands-on experience of all stages of the development process, including conception, laboratory development, chemical reactor scale-up, and commercialization. Using our experience we can focus your process for outsourcing to a GMP facility. We find new synthetic routes to identify a safer, more economical method that reduces waste and allows for scale-up. We will carefully document our experimental procedures and analytical methods to produce a certificate of analysis identifying the composition and purity of your materials.

Bill Boulanger William A. Dr. Boulanger has worked for Abbott Laboratories, FMC, Medi-Chem, and Albany Molecular Research. Not long after AMRI went public, Dr. Boulanger retired at the age of 48. Returning to Champaign, Illinois, home of U.I.U.C. and his Alma Mater, Dr. Boulanger initially tinkered with many of his interests involving chemistry and soon realized he needed more space and equipment so he decided to start OBITER Research allowing him to pursue his many interests and projects.Dr. Boulanger is not your average chemist. He has many hobbies and broad training, much of which he employs at the company. As a machinist and engineer, he builds the company’s reactors, temperature controllers, stirrers, and many other pieces of company equipment. As a glassblower, he designs many pieces of glassware (You can find the “Boulanger trap” in the ACE Glass catalog, for instance.) This broad background he brings to bear at the bench, as the company specializes in very difficult process and preparative chemistry. Frequently, the solution is not strictly in the chemistry, but the chemical engineering aspect of it, thus his solutions and methods are typically unorthodox. Mr. Boulanger brought over 30 years of experience in banking, finance and business management to OBITER Research. Chad guides the business activities of the company and has developed long term strategies to assure the continued expansion and stability of the company. "We need to spread the word about the type of chemistry we do here.” Our success rates are phenomenal and we need to capitalize on that." Boulanger states. Expanding the company’s marketing efforts and exposure to those in need of completing difficult chemistry is the companys top objective. “Increasing the company’s capacity was another top priority of Chad’'s which was fulfilled with the recent completion of a fourth lab within the facility. Chad, has worked in a management capacity for Merrill Lynch, Mellon Financial, Midwest Funding, Hyde Park Bank as well as in his own entrepreneurial ventures.
